Minneapolis indie-pop band Early Eyes released their newest song “Marigolds” last month. This single is one of two that follows their 2018 EP All Shades of Teal

“Marigolds” is a great song to listen to while on a drive as you just simply enjoy – and appreciate – your surroundings. Although the song maintains the staple funky sound that makes the band unique, it also is equal parts soothing. Which makes the final chorus feel even more joyous when it takes on a victorious and upbeat tone. As each time Jake [Berglove] sings the chorus it the mood of the song shifts from melancholy to hopeful. The shift from those two emotions – and at times back again – in the song reflects the real life emotion that can be felt when dealing with re-finding the spark in life.

Instrumentally, I loved that the song used trumpets, as it makes “Marigolds”  stand apart from other indie-pop songs. Also, when the tone of the song shifted I enjoyed that the “new” instruments that were introduced gradually became louder. Most likely symbolizing the gradual – but eventual – shift in emotion regarding the world around oneself, but also themselves.

Overall, “Marigolds” is a solid song! Before now I hadn’t heard of the band Early Eyes, but I can now see why they have garnered such popularity. So, maybe next time you’re stopping to smell the flowers, have “Marigolds” playing in the background!
