Showing us, once again, that there isn’t a genre they won’t experiment with, The 1975 just dropped the latest single from their upcoming album, Notes On A Conditional Form.
The newest entry into the band’s eclectic discography, titled “The Birthday Party” is a look into frontman Matty Healy’s mind, while exploring themes of sobriety and interpersonal relationships, and how they’ve come to impact Matty. “I depend on my friends to stay clean, as sad as it seems,” he laments, over a country-esque instrumental.
Don’t let the softer tone of the song fool you, though — the anticipation for the track was still quite high, thanks to mindshower.ai. Surfacing onto Twitter this past Valentine’s Day, mindshower.ai represents the “digital detox” concept as seen in the video for “The Birthday Party.” Needless to say, the cryptic tweets and website sent fans into a frenzy once the band had begun sharing them.
The video for the track features CGI versions of the band, as well as notable memes like Pepe the Frog, at the mindshower.ai facility. It’s weird, endearing, and you just can’t look away from it. Honestly, it’s the perfect visual for the track, and acts as a commentary on the internet and society all on its own.
With each new song The 1975 brings us from Notes On A Conditional Form, we get a glimpse into just how versatile this band is. If there’s a way to blend sounds together, they’ll give it a try; if there isn’t, then they’ll invent a way to do it. Between the singles that have been officially released from their upcoming record, as well as the live snippets of “Guys” and “If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know),” it’s safe to say that we can’t wait to see what the rest of the album has in store.
