If there’s anything people know about The 1975, it’s that they’re not afraid of experimenting. Their forthcoming album, Notes On A Conditional Form, is all over the place, if the singles are any indication. That’s not a bad thing though; in fact, it’s a great thing. It showcases just how far The 1975’s artistry and versatility has come. It takes a lot of skill to be able to tap into different genres within a single body of work, and still have the final product come out cohesive. So, when I tell you that their newest track, “Me & You Together Song,” sounds like “the most 1975 song ever,” that doesn’t really help explain what it truly is.

Reminiscent of their earlier work, “Me & You Together Song” sounds like it could be pulled straight from the self titled era. However, frontman Matty Healy put it best when he compared it to a Drive Like I Do song. A prior project before The 1975 came to be who they are today, Drive Like I Do had tracks influenced by 2000’s pop rock. One of the things “Me & You Together Song” does so well is that it takes the band back to their roots, but it doesn’t stay there. It brings those early influences back to 2020, and uses them to craft a new, unique sound.

This summer-y tune was made to sing along to. A personal favorite lyric is: “I had a dream where we had kids, you would cook, I’d do the nappies. We went to Winter Wonderland, and it was shit, but we were happy.” It’s cute and cheesy, but at the same time it shows just how much the singer is in love with this girl he’s singing to, even if she might not feel the same.

What “Me & You Together Song” is, at its core, is a collection of every little thing that makes The 1975, The 1975. The Drive Like I Do sound that’s present throughout the song, the lyrics telling the story of longing for a relationship that’ll never quite come to be, the guitar- and drum-driven instrumental — it’s the 1975’s essential elements, but taken to the next level.

Simply put, “Me & You Together Song” is already a standout track from Notes On A Conditional Form. With a music video currently in the works, “Me & You Together Song” needs to be put on your playlist. It’s catchy, perfect to sing along to, and reminds us of the good old days of driving down the highway with the windows down and your best friend in the passenger seat.

Each song from Notes On A Conditional Form so far has shown The 1975’s versatility, and we can’t wait to see what tracks are released next. The album is expected to be released on April 24th via Dirty Hit.
