As the world continues to spin in chaos, Sleep Token unleashes a double dose of sonic intensity, pushing the boundaries of their unique sound and delivering a one-two punch of musical innovation.

“The Summoning” and “Chokehold,” are two sides of the same musical coin, with each track showcasing a different aspect of the band’s unique sound and emotional intensity.

“Chokehold” is a haunting and evocative track that features ethereal vocals and atmospheric guitars. Opening with the lines “When we were made / It was no accident / We were tangled up like branches in a flood,” the song explores the idea of fate and the interconnectedness of all things. The lyrics then shift to a more personal level, as the protagonist confronts a lover who has them in a “chokehold.” The repetition of the phrase “You’ve got me in a chokehold” underscores the intense emotional weight of the situation, as the protagonist feels trapped and powerless.

In contrast, “The Summoning” is a bold and audacious track that opens with a driving guitar riff and soaring vocals. The lyrics are both introspective and empowering, with lines like “Take me past the edge / I want to see the other side” speaking to a desire for transcendence and enlightenment. The song builds to a powerful climax, with dynamic drums and swirling guitars creating a sense of overwhelming intensity.

Perhaps my favorite part of “The Summoning” are the final two minutes, as the song gradually transitions genres and takes a turn towards a funky beat after building up its original progressive-metal sound.  This introspection is underscored by the song’s groove-based rhythm, which emphasizes a more laid-back, contemplative vibe. Light drums and bass add to the song’s funky feel, while the lyrics continue to explore the themes of desire, connection, and the divine.

Despite their differences, both “The Summoning” and “Chokehold” share a common thread of emotional intensity and musical innovation. The soaring vocals and dynamic instrumentation of “The Summoning” complement the haunting atmosphere and introspective lyrics of “Chokehold,” creating a cohesive musical experience that is greater than the sum of its parts.

Overall, Sleep Token’s latest releases are a testament to the band’s unique sound and emotional depth. With “The Summoning” and “Chokehold,” Sleep Token proves once again that they are at the forefront of the progressive metal scene, pushing the boundaries of what is possible with their innovative sound and emotionally charged lyrics.
