After almost 3 years of anticipation, alternative dark pop band PVRIS, are slowly but surely introducing us to the new era of their third studio album, Use Me due to release July 10th. In early March, the band debuted their first single, “Dead Weight,” which quenched the thirst of many fans desperately seeking new PVRIS.
By the end of April, the band followed up with a second single, “Gimme A Minute,” which already displays the diversity of the record between these two songs. This track has a gradual build-up with low electronic pulsations & a booming bass into a fast-paced chorus permitting infectious danceability. The song also encapsulates an auditory strobe-effect with the perpetuating beat that creates the setting of a dance club inside your mind. Despite the irresistible urge to dance along to this record, the vocalist, Lynn Gunn’s, lyrics juxtapose the tone of the tune completely. Gunn compares the sound to the “pacing” right before mentally spiraling & touches on the overwhelming feeling through the lyrics. “A year of lows spent so high / Feeling like I could die / Inner peace is so hard to buy / They’re asking why I think I’m losing my mind.” These words growled right before the intensified guitar solo that fuels the last plea from the chorus.
Although it can be cathartic for artists to express their thoughts & feelings into their work, it is also extremely stressful. Even if you can’t relate as an artist, the overwhelming feeling of needing a minute to mentally catch up & give yourself a break is surely for most. “Gimme A Minute” wonderfully portrays all of these feelings while still feeling groovy. The new PVRIS era is upon us & we are stoked for more even if we have to wait many minutes.
