Rising pop punk band, Neverkept, released their third single “Reunion Tower” earlier this month during their tour with Sleep On It, Bearings & Between You & Me. Unfortunately, that tour run was cut early due to the Coronavirus outbreak. It’s still being determined when the rest of the tour will be rescheduled. A good jam was definitely needed during this unsettling time, so thank you for maintaining the peace, Neverkept.
“Reunion Tower”’s chilling intro transitions into a catchy bassline & groove making the listener curious to hear what’s to come. Once the chorus kicks in, you’re hooked; it’s one you’re already singing along to by the second chorus. Now understanding the overall vibe of the song, the following verse picks up with layered vocalings of their frontman Dorian Cooke, only heightening the haunting melody. Existential lyrics of “Is it worth it to ever waste time? / Is it worth it if we’re running out?” echo between verses likely making the listener very introspective upon their own valued time.
By context of the lyrics, it’s assumed the inspiration for the track is pulled from personal memories of the observation deck of Reunion Tower located in Dallas, Texas. “We used to joke about jumping down / Aimlessly just to see where we’d land.” This could be interpreted as dark, but resonates to me more as a longing for freedom & to live carefree, especially since the chorus reiterates the burden of carrying “the weight of it all.” Lyric analysis aside; although it’s on the slower side, this piece is genuinely fun to listen to. While you sing & sway along absentmindedly, there’s also a sense of catharsis it brings sonically with reverberating guitar riffs & dreamy vocals.
With their other single, “Complicated,” released a few weeks earlier than this one, it’s becoming clearer as to what Neverkept’s sound is going to be moving forward with new material. This fun-but-dark mentality is something I, personally, have always found enticing musically. Neverkept is definitely a band you’re going to want to keep an eye on this year if you want some good new music. Although, there’s no word yet on their first album release, we are certainly itching for more!
