Makena, a Chicago based alternative rock band, released their single “Methane” earlier this month. The song overall is solid, the combinations of the guitar, drums, and layering of main and backing vocals. It will definitely be a crowd pleaser and a song that will strengthen not only their established fanbase, but also attract new fans to add to it as well.

However, the song itself is definitely safe in nature. It adds nothing and takes nothing from the scene that the band is a part of. In an age where genres are shedding the hardlined boxes that used to confine them, a band producing a song that sounds almost eerily like You And Me At Six 2011-12 era of music comes off unoriginal.

Again, I do want to establish that this song is a solid song and definitely showcases Makena’s musical talent and looking into other songs by them like, “Apathy” and “What Lies Beneath,” this is a band that can and should find a permanent home within the scene. This song, however, in terms of sounding unique to Makena, fails to meet the mark.
