In the name of coming out and taking back your own life, popular LGBTQ+ advocate and YouTuber Jessie Paege has released her fourth single, “Coming Out.”
The new track is about learning to cope with coming out as anything LGBTQ+ and not being accepted. It touches on the religious aspects of being in the community in the opening lyric, “My daddy told me this isn’t the way God intended me to be / He tried to mold me, but maybe his god isn’t the god for me.” Religion is one thing that comes up a lot in arguments against being queer, so Paege talking about that in her lyrics is very powerful and relatable to many of her listeners.
“Coming Out” was accompanied by a music video upon its release. The video is based on a true story. It shows Paege’s father catching her kissing a girl, then seeing the guitar with a rainbow strap tattooed on her bicep, and screaming at her. Despite her father’s lack of support, she rises up and continues to be 100% herself.
This isn’t the first time Paege has written about her experiences being a part of the LGBTQ+ community. Her debut single “Not a Phase” with Lucy & La Mer is a bisexual anthem, released back in October of last year. LGBTQ+ issues, mental health, and eating disorders are all talked about heavily in both her music and her social media posts. She is a huge human rights activist that many young people look up to, and “Coming Out” has boosted that.
