Bonsai Trees, a New England indie rock band, just dropped their new single “Apology Note” as the first single off of their upcoming EP Line of Best Fit. The band had hinted at the song’s release over twitter last month. I received the chance to check out the single, and let’s just say “Apology Note” has nothing to apologize for.

From the first listen of “Apology Note”, I am immediately faced with the nostalgia-like flashback to the pop-punk and emo sound of the late 90s and early 2000s. While this is band is very much from today, and the song is bound to be a hit with the fans of today, what makes the song so great is the nostalgic feeling you get.

The song starts with vocalist James MacPherson slowly singing the lyrics “rain soaks over every apology note that you send to me, cobwebs over nails in a coffin and trees I’ll stop barking up,” before the song kicks into high gear, switching from the somber tone to an emotional plea. It’s that switching of the two tones, back and forth, that makes me enjoy the song so much.

As the song continues on, you learn that yes, this is a song about a relationship ending. However, it’s also about the fears and worries that went into the ending of the relationship, and that although MacPherson is sad about the fact that there is an end, the fear of not growing as a person is greater.

I really do think that “Apology Note” is the perfect song to kickstart the year for Bonsai Trees, and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year will bring from them.
