If you’re looking for your newest music obsession, look no further than alternative dark-pop singer laye. Having just released her captivating debut album lonesome this past July, laye is destined to take the world by storm.

We had the chance to speak with the Montreal-based singer about her record, how she faces the music process, and her plans for the future.

You have this glorious and dark aesthetic to your work. What drew you to it?

“I want all aspects of my art to reflect who I am. I think the more that everything lines up, the truer the art is and so I try to put work out there that I feel represents me. My Instagram is my favourite, and twitter, because that’s where I get to fully be me.”

What was it like working with such legendary producers?

“Everyone I worked with on this album were amazing, and they all worked differently so I learnt from them all.”

What inspired you to make the transition from poetry to music when you were a teen?

“It was the wanting to sing words that were my own.”

What would you be your favorite song on lonesome?

“I like them all for different reasons – ‘more’ is the most personal while ‘better’ is one that I imagined going sonically, and ‘lonely anthem’ is one I fought for. ‘haventhadlove’ was one that meant a lot to me when I wrote it too.”

Are there any artists you draw inspiration from?

“Would love to do an album Bon Iver inspired. Dying to make a sad and sultry album for the souls.”

What is your number one goal at the moment?

“Making album two.”

Who would be your dream to tour with?

“The Weeknd, Bon Iver.”

What is the biggest obstacle you’ve faced with your music?

“I think not knowing where you’re going. Most careers you have a certain path set out for you with goals you reach along the way. With music, you’re just following your passion and hoping it catches on somewhere. It’s an emotional roller coaster.”

What is your writing process like?

“Changes according to the session and who I’m working with. Sometimes I start from scratch within a session with a producer and other times I write alone at home- I rather write at home alone.”

What is some advice you’d give someone who wanted to get involved in music?

“Don’t give up! Keep pushing forward! And take care of yourself!”
