On November 9th, the LA-based indie pop artist Sasha Sloan brought her Let’s Get Sad tour to Chicago’s Chop Shop. Alongside her was groove rock band, Winnetka Bowling League. The tour came in conjunction with the release of her third EP Self Portrait, which was released on October 28th under RCA Records.
Starting off the night was the LA group, Winnetka Bowling League. From there set it’s quite apparent of where the band is based, from the stories being told to the dreamy instrumentals, the overall vibe of the group just screams California. One song that stuck out to me was “are you okay?” of their debut EP Winnetka Bowling League. The song is about the frontman, Matt Koma, writing about things he wish he said to an ex-girlfriend, from when he first moved to Los Angeles, post breakup. Like many of the group’s songs, the track is deep and tell a story from moments in life that come together in a matter of 3-4 minutes.
Next up was the up and coming sad girl, Sasha Sloan, who kicked off her set with “Thoughts” off of her latest EP. Her performance reflects a melancholic mood however its almost impossible to get up and groove to her music. Sloan’s song “Dancing with Your Ghost,” a personal favorite of mine, was featured on HBO’s Euphoria soundtrack. The track itself is raw and vulnerable; more than enough to pull at the listener’s heartstrings.
Overall, Sasha Sloan’s performance was a wonderfully put together in the sense that the atmosphere was laid back, the crowd enjoyed being able to sing their hearts out together and get sad.
