We recently had the opportunity to hear directly from Alexander 23 at his press conference to learn all about what he has been up to during the pandemic and his highly anticipated EP, “Oh No, Not Again”.

When asked about the song “Cry Over Boys”  and the lyric “You cry over boys you haven’t even met in real life,” Alex broke down the lyrical story. H explained that he wrote the song from the perspective of someone else, then slowly saw himself within the lyrics that revolved around romanticizing romance itself, and putting effort towards a hypothetical relationship before his own happiness.

While discussing his process of lyric-writing, Alexander further went on to say that over the past year in quarantine, he was able to write songs in his own space, but emphasized the absence of missing going on tour and being able to write new experiences. As for making music, he suggested to anyone who might just be getting started: “Don’t be afraid to suck or be bad, if you make it long enough it will get good.”

We asked Alexander his go-to album to bring to a deserted island, and he cited John Mayer’s 2006 record Continuum, citing that it was an album he would listen to forever.

Circling back to the EP, Alexander was then asked what he wanted to communicate to his listeners with Oh No, Not Again. The message was simple: “that you’re not alone,” and he emphasized that “another real human that feels the same as you do.” These feelings he mentions blend together with the themes of heartbreak within the EP.

Oh No, Not Again is a bundle of low-fi pop hits paired up with soft guitars and personal lyric accounting heartaches and past relationships.
