Reggie-pop singer OMI, famously known for his 2014 hit single “Cheerleader,” released his new single “Bring My Baby Back” two weeks ago. “Bring My Baby” is being advertised as OMI’s coming back song, something to bring the artist back into the charts in the new decade of music. Something that is possible with this feel good catchy tune! The song is a good welcome to summer, and has a perfectly timed release as beaches in the United States are starting to open, allowing it to be the song you listen to while driving along the beachsides.
The song covers looking for a lost – or potential – love in a fun way that differs from current music and harkins back to the pop music of the mid-2010’s. “Bring My Baby Back” however, also can become a timeless summer classic in it’s own right that just like “Cheerleader” and “Hula Hoop” did before it.
Overall, I think OMI chose a strong song to open the sound wave of his career with. It’s familiar enough for older fans and previous casual fans to gravitate to, while also sounding different enough to not sound like a rerelease. I personally look forward to seeing how “Bring My Baby Back” fairs on the summer charts and to see if it dominates the radio as its predecessors had.
