British singer-songwriter Dua Lipa released her second studio album Future Nostalgia earlier this year. After the album leaked, the singer brought forward the release day by a week. On the second week since its release, the record went number one in the United Kingdom.

Continuing to be a pop powerhouse, although this time around influenced mostly by disco, Lipa tackles topics like relationships and inequality whilst maintaining the same empowering vibe that she started with hit singles like IDGAF and New Rules from her debut album Dua Lipa released in 2017.

As expected from promotional singles such as “Don’t Start Now” and title-track “Future Nostalgia”, Lipa’s songs are filled with synths, deep bases, and straight-up club bangers. Songs like “Levitating, “Break My Heart”, and “Physical” follow this vibe.

The record also has tunes that seemed more relaxed in melody, even if the lyrics aren’t so chill, such as “Cool”, “Pretty Please”, and “Good In Bed” that are filled with undeniable wit and charm.

The singer chose to close the album with an empowering message highlighting the female point of view of sexual harassment. This comes in the form of “Boys Will Be Boys”, a song that narrates just how different it is to grow up in the world as female and the things one has to worry about when being forced to grow up faster than their male counterparts.

Filled with feel-good dance-pop goodness, Future Nostalgia marks an interesting and strong sophomore album from Dua Lipa where she opens up and showcases all the ground she’s able to cover up while continuing to be unapologetically outspoken on the things that she believes in.
