Formed in 2011, Silvestre y la Naranja is an independent band from Argentina composed of Francisco Nicholson (guitar), Justo Fernandez Madero (voice and composition), Fernando Laprida (drums), Mateo Dufour (keyboard) and Lucas Grasso (bass).
On November 8th they released their new album, ‘ANIM4LES’ (ANIM4LS).
This record differs from the beginnings of the band when their music was characterized by a folk sound inspired by bands like Mumford & Sons. Elements closer to pop and a lot of synthesizers are present, especially in songs like “Animales,” filled with a sensual tone reminiscing of a night with a lover, and “Todas Esas Tardes,” a song about losing someone that you should have cherished and appreciated more and regretting it.
Some songs feel more dramatic than others, such as “El Instinto,” which references in sound the same that it does lyrically: life in the city, how everything feels loud, stuffy and like a routine. It finishes with how we should listen to our instinct to find something different.
Others are softer, like the single “Sos Todo Que Que Bien,” which talks about falling for someone at first sight, and “Loco Por Vos.”
There is only one exception to the band’s newer sound: “Disfraces,” which sounds like their older material, drawing inspiration from folk. The track shows a certain sensibility and intimacy that can’t be found in any other part of this album.
Silvestre y la Naranja creates endless atmospheres and puts forward feelings that one can feel identified with. They do so through a record that is not only cohesive and fun but also feels unique and true to them as a band.
