Ahead of opening this year’s KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas, we had a chance to chat with The Beaches about Blame My Ex and their upcoming tour.
Well, we’re so excited to have you with Ascribe. So, I just want to say congratulations on the success of Blame My Ex. And the song “Blame Brett” – I feel like you’ve just been blowing up right now. Obviously, you never know when something’s gonna have kind of that viral moment. But did you guys have an inkling?
You know, I don’t want to say like, I knew it was gonna go viral. I definitely knew the record was going to be successful, because I think the songs really speak for themselves. And I also know that like, a lot of people are going through their own breakups right now. Because it’s sort of the end of COVID. And all the COVID relationships are ending. So there’s a lot of people in general, but especially right now, that I think would find a breakup story to really resonate with them.
I agree. Yeah. Personally, I was super excited to hear Beach Weather on the record. How did that collaboration come about?
We found each other on Twitter. And I just love their outfits. And I kind of just, like, got chatting to them. And we just both became fans of each other. And when we were making the album, we thought then “My Body Ft Your Lips” needed something to spice it up a little, just give it a little lift. And Nick has such a sexy voice.
And then you guys have been a band for 10 years now, which is kind of a feat. I mean, looking back, what would you tell yourselves 10 years ago about the journey?
God, I guess that this sort of line of work takes a lot of endurance and that it’s not a sprint. It’s a long run. And to do it with people that you love, which we already do. You know, we were lucky to start this project, like being best friends, because it takes a lot of tenacity and a lot of hard work. And a lot of tough times in order to kind of hope to make it and we’re so thankful and lucky that this record is really starting to resonate with people. My younger self wouldn’t believe all the things we’ve accomplished. There’s just been so many pinch me moments this whole year for us.
You guys are going on tour next year. Most of the dates are already sold out. My best friend was so happy to get tickets to the Troubadour. Do you have a specific stop that you’re really looking forward to that you’re, like, the show is going to be memorable?
I think for us because we are acquainted with Elton John so he’s helped us throughout our careers – to be able to play a venue that was so monumental to him will kind of be like a full circle moment for us. New York’s really cool. There’s a bunch of them. I think the fact that we’re from Canada, it’s really hard to break out of Canada. We love our country, but it is really hard for Canadian bands to cross over. So the fact that most of our US tour is sold out is such an accomplishment.
You made it over the border!
With Bieber and Drake, following their footsteps!
My last question is are shower beers any good?
Better is better than a regular one. You’ve got to put it in the freezer. If it’s nice and cold in the contrast of a hot shower, it’s beautiful. Love it. Get your shower accessories ready, put your beer in the freezer, grab it when you’re naked.
I love it. Thank you so much for talking with us.
Thank you.
And break a leg. I’m so excited.
